Begin with a trip to the Asakusa locality, well-known for its “shitamachi” or old-world vibe. You can visit the Sensoji temple, a Buddhist temple believed to be Tokyo’s oldest. Adjacent to the temple you will find the Nakamise “dori” or street, where you can taste some traditional snacks if you like. Travel across town to Omotesando and after exploring the ritzy flagship stores and spectacular architecture on the main boulevard. Next, make your last stop at the famous Meiji shrine, dedicated to the spirit of Emperor Meiji. The World of a Traditional Geisha Explore the fascinating and genteel world of a traditional Japanese geisha, with Peter Macintosh, an academic and an expert on geisha studies. Go on a walking tour of Kyoto’s old geisha districts with Peter, picking up interesting bits on this almost dying form of traditional Japanese entertainment. You may even spot a geisha and her apprentice (maiko) along the way. Spend the rest of your evening at the private room of a traditional restaurant, in the genteel company of geisha and Peter, who will act as your translator. Osaka Street Food Trail Eat your heart out on this evening food trail at Osaka’s street food paradise – Shinsekai or Dotonbori, – in the company of your local guide. This pedestrian-only food street in the boisterous Namba District, is lined with causal eateries and hole-in-the-wall establishments, dishing out local favorites and delicious Kansai delicacies. Cross the Dotonbori Bridge and settle down to the joys of sampling delectable takoyaki dumplings (or “octopus balls” as they are more popularly called) and kushikatsu (skewered meat and vegetables). Try out some of Japan’s best ramen noodles from street stalls and scrumptious wagyu beef from high-end eating houses, followed by cheese cakes for dessert, all of which can be washed down with cups of sake or tea.
