Windhoek

Windhoek, Namibia’s small capital yet the largest city, lies in a beautiful valley bordered by the Eros Mountains in the north and the Auas mountains in the south. Its German colonial past has lingered, especially in language and architecture, yet it is fused with a modern style. Whilst some call the city provincial, it also has a cosmopolitan flare. Enjoy traditional German dishes, bread and beer, and even celebrate the German carnival. Explore the center, Independence Avenue, by foot. Visit the Tintenpalast (Ink Palace), which houses Namibia’s parliament, the 19th century Lutheran Christuskirche (Christ Church), the Alte Feste (Old Fort), and the National Museum.

The sand dunes of Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert are often referred to as the highest dunes in the world. Correct or not, Sossusvlei is surely one of the most spectacular sights in Namibia. Located in the Namib Naukluft, the largest conservation area in Africa, and fourth largest in the world, we recommend you view Sossusvlei at sunrise and sunset when the colors are strong and constantly changing, allowing for wonderful photographic opportunities. The midday heat is intense and best spent in the shade. Sesriem Canyon, close to the the campsite, is another popular attraction.

Otjiwarongo is a lively town that serves as a regional hub in north-central Namibia. It is a three-hour drive from Windhoek on the B1 Highway and is often referred to as the ‘Cheetah Capital of the World’. The Cheetah Conservation Fund is located about 45 minutes outside town and is open to visitors. You can take a guided tour, watch cheetah runs, and learn about their ‘livestock guarding dog’ program. The surrounding area is also home to the Okonjima Nature Reserve, which is well known for its leopard and cheetah tracking. It is a great place to see these big cats up close in a rehabilitated environment. The Waterberg Plateau lies just 56 miles to the east as well. This enormous red sandstone table is roughly 200 million years old and rises 150 meters above the plains. It serves as a sanctuary for endangered species such as black and white rhino and sable antelope. You will also find a Crocodile Ranch within the town itself that operates one of the few captive breeding programs for Nile Crocodiles in Namibia.
