Cairo

Cairo, the capital of Egypt, is both a crowded modern city and a living museum. The city’s historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage site, contains an astounding concentration of medieval architectural treasures. To walk down the usually crowded pedestrian street is to walk into the city’s past. Cairo has also preserved much of its architectural and urban heritage from across the ages. Monuments from the Pharaonic, Greek, Roman, Coptic, and Islamic eras are sprinkled throughout the city. Of course, top of the list are the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx that rise from the desert sands. The Khan Al Khalili market, established in the 14th century, remains a vibrant hub for cultural and economic activity. It’s a great place to discover traditional Egyptian crafts, jewellery and textiles. The Grand Egyptian Museum has a vast collection that includes the Gold Masks of King Tutankhamun. Cairo is also the place to explore the Egyptian’s love of food. Among the highlights are ful medames, a breakfast dish of fava beans, and kushari, considered to be Egypt’s national dish.

Aswan

Aswan, originally called Sunn by the ancient Egyptians, is a laidback market and tourist city located on the east bank of the Nile. Here the river flows leisurely and the pace of life slows down to match it. Aswan historically served as the southern gateway to Egypt and is home to a number of significant archaeological sites, including five UNESCO World Heritage sites. They are the island of Elephantine, the Egyptian granite stone quarries with the Unfinished Obelisk, the tombs of Qubbet el-Hawa, the Coptic Monastery of St. Simeon and the Fatimid Cemetery. The Nubian Museum is worth a visit to see the Nubian artifacts that were saved before the Aswan Dam flooded the area. You can use Aswan as a base to check out other attractions in the region. Head north on a Nile cruise to see the temples of Edfu and Kom Ombo or sail south to visit the temples of Philae. The mighty Aswan Dam is a short drive away as well, and you can walk right up the edge of the 364-foot wall.

Nile Cruise (from Aswan to Luxor)

Set out on a cruise to discover the magnificent Nile, the world’s longest river that has given life to historic civilizations and their extraordinary monuments, over centuries. Setting out from Aswan aboard a riverboat, sail upstream to Luxor while you watch the changing colors on the river and the sight of magical landmarks on its banks and beyond. At Aswan, riverine islands and the UNESCO-listed Philae Temple make for picturesque sights. Closer to Luxor, several monuments of note dot the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens on the west bank of the Nile, facing Luxor. Along the way, watch fishermen cast their nets, and catch sight of the Egyptian and Glossy Ibis, plovers, snipes, and egrets along the river bank. These waters are also home to an ancient species – the mighty Nile crocodile!

Red Sea Egypt

Once a little fishing village, Hurghada has grown to become one of the largest resort destinations on the Red Sea coast, with a mix of leisure, adventure, and cultural activities. It is home to some exceptional snorkeling and diving sites, such as the famous Giftun Islands and the Coral Reef caves. There are plenty of other water sports to try as well, such as kite surfing and jet skiing. If you prefer a slower pace, the town’s beautiful sandy beach lends itself to lying around and soaking up the sun. In the evening, stroll along Hurghada Marina and take in the sight of luxury yachts bobbing in the water. The old town of El Dahar is worth a visit with its bustling souks and traditional coffee shops. Hurghada also has a thriving nightlife with many restaurants, bars, and nightclubs, particularly in the modern Sekalla district. If it is culture you are after, there are safaris to the Eastern Arabian Desert that include a visit to a Bedouin village.
