Bangkok is a city of captivating contrasts, where ancient temples stand alongside gleaming skyscrapers. Founded in 1782 as the capital of the Rattanakosin Kingdom, the city has grown from a small trading post on the Chao Phraya River into a sprawling metropolis of over 10 million people. The bustling city is famous for its ornate Buddhist shrines, including the stunning Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew with its revered Emerald Buddha. Daily life here moves at a frenetic pace. Tuk-tuks weave through traffic-choked streets while locals and visitors alike navigate crowded local markets and luxurious shopping malls. The Chao Phraya River winds through the city, offering a glimpse of traditional wooden houses amid the urban sprawl. Do not miss touring the aromatic street food stalls serving pad thai and mango sticky rice, or taking a longtail boat through the historic canals to experience the city’s quieter side.
