Victoria Falls

Smoke that thunders! That is what the Kolobo tribe who lived by the Victoria Falls two centuries ago once called this seventh wonder of the world. The spray can be seen from miles away. The wide basalt cliff, over which the falls thunder, transforms the Zambezi from a wide placid river into a ferocious torrent cutting through a series of dramatic gorges. A path along the edge of the surrounding rainforest provides you with unparalleled views from various special vantage points. Enjoy diverse activities, from helicopter rides to gentle boat cruises on the Zambezi.

Lower Zambezi

Lower Zambezi National Park lies across the Zambezi River from the historically better known Mana Pools in Zimbabwe. With its floodplains, grasslands and tall forests the valley supports fantastic game densities. Enormous herds of elephant, some up to 100 strong, are often seen at the river’s edge and even swimming across it in order to feed on the grassy islands, where buffalo also graze. Impala are everywhere and kudu, eland, waterbuck, zebra and wildebeest are common. Predators include leopard, lion prides and wild dog packs. You can enjoy diverse safari experiences, with game drives by day and night, excellent walking, as well as fishing, motorboat and canoe trips.

The concentration of game around South Luangwa River, the park’s backbone, and its lagoons is among the highest in Africa with herds of elephant and buffalo descending the dusty banks to drink. Large crocodiles laze on sandbanks and at dusk hundreds of hippo leave their pools and lumber up the banks to graze. Predators abound with lion, leopard and spotted hyena. Walking safaris originated in this park and with the fantastic guides and scouts, walking is still one of the finest ways to experience this pristine wilderness.

Lusaka

Lusaka is one of the fastest-growing cities in central Africa, with a sprawling downtown area, high-walled suburbs, busy shanty towns, bustling markets and large industrial areas, bringing together people of many nationalities and making it a bustling center for economic, political and cultural activities. With the focus around a sixties style grand avenue of tower blocks and surrounded by shanties, the town really has very little to offer in the way of sights and yet can be a fascinating place to explore. The main reason to stay here, however, is to catch an early departing flight.
