Windhoek, Namibia’s small capital yet the largest city, lies in a beautiful valley bordered by the Eros Mountains in the north and the Auas mountains in the south. Enjoy traditional German dishes, bread and beer, and even celebrate the German carnival. Explore the center, Independence Avenue, by foot. Visit the Tintenpalast (Ink Palace), which houses Namibia’s parliament, the 19th century Lutheran Christuskirche (Christ Church), the Alte Feste (Old Fort), and the National Museum.

Visit some of Windhoek’s striking landmarks on a drive or long walk in Robert Mugabe Avenue on this self-guided activity. Drive or walk to Christ Church or Evangelical Lutheran Church built from local sandstone in 1910. Observe the influences of Neo-Gothic, Romanesque, and Art Nouveau styles in its architecture, and the stained-glass windows donated by Kaiser Wilhelm II. The imposing Kalahari desert stretches from the Orange River in the south to Angola in the north, and from eastern Namibia through Botswana until after the mountain ranges in Zimbabwe! The intense orange-red sand formations of this vast expanse and the soft rock formations at the Orange River, are a result of sixty million years of erosion! Dominated by grasses, thorny bushes and acacia trees, the desert receives a fair amount of rainfall, which is filtered rapidly, leaving the region dry and arid as ever! The Kalahari has the longest continuation of sand dunes in the world!

Experience a guided nature drive and a stunning sunset in the Kalahari. Board an open vehicle at the Kalahari Anib Lodge in Mariental, and drive through the Gondwana Kalahari Park, enjoying panoramic views of the undulating sand dunes. Stand atop one of the dunes to watch the beautiful play of burnt orange colors as the sun sets on the desert. Look out for any native fauna such as the gemsbok, springbok, ostrich, black-backed jackal, the kori bustard or the weaver birds. The sand dunes of Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert are often referred to as the highest dunes in the world. Correct or not, Sossusvlei is surely one of the most spectacular sights in Namibia. Located in the Namib Naukluft, the largest conservation area in Africa, and fourth largest in the world, we recommend you view Sossusvlei at sunrise and sunset when the colors are strong and constantly changing, allowing for wonderful photographic opportunities. The midday heat is intense and best spent in the shade. Sesriem Canyon, close to the the campsite, is another popular attraction.

Make the most of an ideal combination of relaxation and adventure on the Quad Buggy nature trail. In the afternoon, set out in your very own Quad buggy. This unusual drive offers a spectacular view of the desert grass plains with stops ideal for photography. Learn about the local flora and fauna from knowledgeable local guides. The trail steadily climbs uphill and ends with a gorgeous sunset accompanied with a delicious sundowner, before you return to the Sossusvlei lodge. Learn about the colonial history of the town that was founded in 1892 as the main harbor for German southwest Africa. Visit the National Marine Aquarium that features aquatic creatures from the cold Benguela Current in the south Atlantic Ocean. Drop by the Woermannhaus with the prominent Damara tower, and now a public library. Run through glimpses of Namibian history in the Swakopmund Museum. Admire incredible crystal formations, including the world’s largest quartz crystal cluster in the Kristall Galerie. Choose to visit the lighthouse built in 1903 from hewn quarry stones and the pier known as the Mole. Explore the Altes Gefängnis prison, designed by Heinrich Bause in 1909. Invoke the spirit! In the northwest of Nambia lies Damaraland. The former homeland of the Damara people, it is an arid place of imagination with its bizarre rock formations across a stunningly beautiful mountainous landscape. Near Twyfellfontein, you can witness the ancient rock formations and some 2,000 petroglyphs (engravings) that date back to 3,300 BC. From the Burnt Mountain and Organ Pipes to the Doros Crater, these once invoked the shamanistic rituals of the people. Explore the petrified forest for your own chance at glancing this region’s past!

Explore the untamed and the wild with elephant drives across Damaraland, one of the most iconic regions of Namibia. The region surrounding the camp is home to nearly 600 desert-dwelling elephants that have adapted their lifestyles to survive the harshness of the sun-blistered landscape. Set out on open vehicles to find these magnificent beasts in one of their last remaining habitats. The drives last for four to six hours in the morning. Other excursions include driving to the wonderful rocky outcrop of the Twyfelfontein in the afternoon. Stopover at Kristallkellerei and Vineyard Tour

Set off at a convenient time on this enjoyable self-guided exploration of the country’s oldest winery. Make your way to the sprawling Kristallkellerei farm located just outside of Omaruru town to know more about the wines produced in this part of the world. Stroll around the lush vineyards near the Erongo Mountain range that sit on sandy soil irrigated with well water. Gain insights into how vintners nurture their vineyards in a region known for its extreme fluctuations of heat and cold. Personalized Petrified Forest and the Organ Pipes Tour

Embark on this self-guided discovery tour of two unusual geological attractions in the Damaraland region. Set off at your own pace and make your way to the outskirts of Khorixas town near the Burnt Mountain. Follow the path that leads to a small gorge that is home to a 328 feet (100 m) stretch of unique basalt rock formations that resemble organ pipes. Get a good look at the cluster that is believed to be 150 million years old. Afterward, travel the distance to the petrified forest where you can find tree trunks that are up to 111 feet (34 m) in length. Look up close at the 50-odd tree trunks that are thought to be 260 million years old. Listen as your local guide speaks about how the trees are likely to have been swept downstream to this spot in a massive flood. Explore this national monument to your heart’s content before returning to your accommodation. On the northeast of the country, at the border with Angola, lies the Kavango River and the town of Rundu – the capital of the Kavango-East area and a seat of government. During the struggle for Independence, Rundu a base for the South African armed forces. Today, this frontier town boasts the biggest healthcare centre in the entire Kavango region as well as an airport and various different types of accommodation. A popular stopover for travelers en route to Caprivi, Rundu offers you dynamic cultural encounters, warm and friendly locals, and delicious local cuisine.

Explore biodiversity in a wetland! A narrow strip of land in the extreme northeast of Namibia, the Caprivi Strip is about 400 kilometers long. This is one of the wettest regions of Namibia, not only because it rains a lot here but also because of the three rivers that flow through here – the Okavango, the Kwando and the Zambezi. Several reserves have been built in the area to protect the wild animals, which walk around freely inside the reserves as there are no fences to restrict their movement. The region offers you fantastic game drives and incredible mokoro or dugout canoe rides.

Eastern Caprivi

Namibia’s Caprivi region is one of Southern Africa’s emerging wildlife spots, just waiting to be explored. A little off the beaten track, Eastern Caprivi is largely a river country, enclosed by the Zambezi, Kwando, Linyanti, and Chobe rivers. It is marked by mopane woodlands, camelthorn, Natal mahogany and mangosteen. The flood plains, oxbow lakes and conserved swampland were once home to one of the greatest concentration of wildlife in Namibia till heavy poaching over the last couple of decades ravaged the land. The good news is that the wildlife has been slowly returning in recent years. The best game viewing season is during the dry winter months of June to October. You will find herds of elephants, hippos, buffalo, zebras, kudu and impala in abundance, together with crocodiles, warthogs, and baboons. Eastern Caprivi is a great destination for bird lovers too, with waterfront flocks of egrets, herons, cranes, and plovers, nesting by its many rivers, lakes and watering holes.
