Western Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe

Western Hwange National Park forms the western edge of the Hwange National Park, the largest national park in Zimbabwe and among the ten largest in the continent. The park is conveniently located between Bulawayo and Victoria Falls. Western Hwange National Park borders Botswana, with the Kalahari Desert to its south-west. Mopane woodlands mark its north and north-west zones. The park is a haven for wildlife and nature lovers. These savannah grasslands are home to animals such as gemsbok, Cape wild dogs, elephants and lions, particularly during the wet season.

You will come across local wetland birds, along the Deka and Lukosi rivers and their tributaries, as well as along the Gwabadzabuya River, a tributary of the Nata River, to the far south of the park. Safari drives, bush walks and birding trips, accompanied by wildlife guides and trackers, are popular at the park. Of special interest are the many pans or water holes, most of them artificially maintained by park authorities, where animals gather to drink in the dry season. Some of the natural pans are found in Ngweshla, Shakwanki, Nehimba, and the Shumba area.
