Liberia is the capital of Guanacaste province in northwest Costa Rica. Traditionally used as a waystation for tourists looking to explore the province, Liberia has reinvented itself as a destination in its own right. It has an international airport, Guanacaste’s largest shopping strips and the province’s only movie theaters, which are housed in the mall. Ermita de la Agonia Church, which was built in 1865, offers a prime example of Spanish colonial architecture. Check out Liberia’s bustling farmer’s market, held on Thursday afternoons and all-day Friday. The Guanacaste Museum hosts art and cultural exhibitions.
