Kratie, pronounced kra-cheh, is one of four provinces in northeastern Cambodia. Located far enough away from popular destinations to attract the crowds, due to its relatively remote location, it is an interesting spot if you are looking for some tranquility. Kratie is brimming with delightful French colonial buildings as it avoided damage during the country’s civil war. With some of the most glorious sunsets in Cambodia, Kratie is best known for what can be found within the mighty Mekong River that it is situated along: rare freshwater Irrawaddy dolphins. These dolphins are on the critically endangered list due to increasing pollution and disease, however conservation efforts are underway to ensure their protection at both national and international levels.

Full Day Rural Motorbike Ride & Dolphin Spotting Tour

Experience a thrilling motorbike ride to the western bank of Mekong River! This unique activity begins after breakfast when you will venture off the beaten track into rural Cambodia. With the wind in your hair you can observe the paddy fields that make up much of the local landscape, as well as other seasonal crops. You can also witness certain seasonal activities that respect local Khmer traditions from rice whiskey distilling, and noodle making to palm sugar production. You will be welcomed into a local villager’s home where you can share a delicious homemade meal brimming with local specialties and ingredients. After lunch, head to Kampi, where several deep pools are situated and where many of the rare freshwater Irrawaddy river dolphins often congregating to eat. If there’s no luck there, then a Mekong River cruise on a local boat might just give you the opportunity. Viewing is quite common, particularly during the drier season when waters are shallow. After an hour of dolphin spotting, you will drive back to Kratie.
