Mogan Shan is a mountain top tourist village near Hangzhou, surrounded by rolling tea terraces and bamboo groves. Dubbed the “Hamptons of China”, the area was first occupied in the late 1800s by missionaries and their families to escape the heat of Shanghai during summers. Today, the proximity to Shanghai, tranquility, and availability of boutique hotels and restaurants attract guests who need a breather from the city hustle. The rolling hills are home to China’s “Bamboo Sea” of the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon movie fame and hundreds of charming colonial villas. Relax in farmhouse style guest houses, wander through bamboo forests and tea plantations and wind down evenings with a glass of wine from the cellar. For the more sporty folks, the mountainous terrain is ideal for biking, rafting, ziplining, and rock climbing as well.
