Snaefellsnes Peninsula in west Iceland is known for its dramatic landscapes, comprising sparkling fjords, volcanic peaks, lava fields and stunning beaches. The glacier-capped Snaefellsjokull Volcano dominates this 62-mile-long peninsula. Also called ‘Iceland in Miniature,’ this picturesque region is dotted with charming fishing hamlets, historic villages and towns along the rugged yet beautiful Atlantic coastline. Whilst driving across the peninsula from Stykkisholmur on the north coast to Arnarstapi in the south, you’re greeted by magnificent vistas of purple lupine fields, rock formations horse farms and ancient ruins. There’s plenty to do here, including whale watching from Grundarfjordur, seal-spotting at Ytri Tunga and exploring an 8,000-year-old lava cave at Vatnshellir. In Snaefellsjokull National Park the big attractions are Malariff Lighthouse and Londrangar, part of an extinct volcano crater where two basalt volcanic rocks jut out from the ocean.
