Although the volcano is dormant, you can still see plenty of thermal pools and hot springs – all created by the volcanic activity. You can also spot geothermal steam holes (fumaroles) where the cozido (stew) is cooked underground for several hours. The tranquil Furnas lake makes for a magical setting for a hike, with the dramatic mountains as a backdrop. For a bird’s eye view of the entire landscape, head up to the scenic Pico do Ferro viewpoint. The Terra Nostra with its hotel and restaurant and Poca de Dona Beija are other scenic landmarks, both offering the chance to take a rejuvenating dip in outdoor thermal pools.
