Alleppey was once dubbed the Venice of the East by the visiting former Viceroy of India, Lord Curzon. This description is appropriate, as the sleepy town is flanked by the Arabian Sea on the west, and sits by a vast labyrinth of picturesque lakes, tranquil lagoons, and a maze of rivers. The great Lake Ashtamudi skirts the edge of the town.
