Explore Anchorage on Your Own
Explore Alaska’s largest city, Anchorage, at your own pace. Set off along the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail that runs along the coastline and passes through serene forests. The fully paved trail begins in the downtown area and goes right up to Kincaid Park. Enjoy gorgeous views of Cook Inlet and six mountain ranges from vantage points. You can also see North America’s highest peak, Denali or Mount McKinley. Head to the aptly named Sunshine Plaza to see historic photographs and trivia about the 1964 earthquake, the largest recorded in North America. Alternatively, make your way to Earthquake Park to see for yourself how this natural disaster permanently changed the Alaskan landscape. Discover indigenous culture and tradition at the Alaska Native Heritage Center with its displays of local crafts and live dance performances. Drive yourself from Anchorage to Homer in your rental car (Duration: 4 hrs)

Aptly named the ‘Halibut fishing capital of the world,’ it invites you to explore the ocean and wilderness to your heart’s content.

Departing from Homer Spit, make your way across Kachemak Bay towards the secluded coastal community of Seldovia. Navigate the Eldred Passage and explore the area around the Elephant Rock, home to harbor seals, sea otters, and a variety of seabirds. Listen to live commentary about the region’s history and geographical features. Cruising past the Herring Islands, keep an eye out for orcas, humpback and minke whales in the waters. Arriving at Seldovia, walk around the charming town to get glimpses of local lifestyles. Learn about the native people and traditions at the Seldovia Museum & Visitor Center. Stroll on the original boardwalk and hike to the historic St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church, which is perched on a hilltop. On your return journey, pass by Gull Island. Explore Homer on Your Own
Set out to explore the scenic city of Homer at your own pace. You could start your day with a visit to the art galleries in town for a glimpse of the local talent. Head to the harbor for a leisurely cruise that lets you discover the beauty of Kachemak Bay. Keep an eye out for whales and bald eagles that are found aplenty in the region. Back on shore, choose to make your way to the historic old town area to browse its charming storefronts. Take your pick of elegant restaurants and cozy cafes to sample fresh seafood delicacies. You could also sign up for winery and brewery tours followed by tasting sessions. Hemmed in by seven glaciers, it offers an idyllic escape just an hour’s drive from Anchorage. Guided hikes and aerial tours allow you to discover the area’s glaciers while kayaking is ideal for enjoying the vistas from the water.

Discover the joy of paddling among icebergs on this enjoyable kayaking escapade. Embark on a scenic train ride along Turnagain Arm as you make your way to Spencer Glacier. Step off at Spencer Whistle Stop and take a short shuttle ride to the cove. Take in splendid views of the icebergs and the massive glacier as you gear up. Glide among the icebergs till you reach the face of the glacier. Stop along the way to rest and capture stunning images of the breathtakingly beautiful landscape. Spot wildlife and learn interesting facts about the history of the region. Take a break from paddling and set off along hiking trails near the glacial surface. After a day of active fun, relax on the train ride back. Hop on a flight to get a panoramic view of Mount Denali, or ‘the high one,’ in the language of the Athabascan Indians, the former settlers of this region. From the air you can get a look at the routes that Denali’s first pioneers took. Observe the nearly 14,000-foot Wickersham Wall, which was scaled only in 1963. Watch Kahiltna Pass unfold before your eyes and feast upon the visual spectacle of the Peters, Muldrow and Traleika glaciers as they come into view. Around the massive mountain the rest of the six-million-acre Denali national park stretches out towards the horizon. Explore Denali by road! Join your experienced driver guide on a journey through Denali National Park’s single-stretch gravel road as it winds past Arctic tundra landscapes and icy glacial rivers. Keep your eyes peeled for sightings of grizzly bears, wolves, caribou and Dall sheep. At Mile 46, pause at the Polychrome Overlook to see the colorful vegetation, streams, glaciers and mountains. Further stops at Toklat River and the Eielson Visitor Center prepare you for the mining district of Kantishna, deep in the heart of Denali. After a buffet lunch at the warm Denali Backcountry Lodge, try your hand at panning for gold in Moose Creek or visit pioneer Fannie Quigley’s cabin on a guided hike with a naturalist.
