Alice Springs, Australia’s quintessential bush town, goes back to the late 19th century when it was established to link the towns of Darwin and Adelaide on the country’s first telegraph network. The remote town has often been celebrated in classical Australian literature as the last vestige of civilization within the great Australian Outback. Variously known as “Alice” or “The Alice”, its Aboriginal name is “Mparntwe” and the town continues to be an important site of Aboriginal culture and heritage. It is a popular base for travelers headed to the “Red Center” and the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. Alice Springs is also home to museums, numerous art galleries showcasing indigenous art and crafts, as well as a wildlife park.
