Tefé is a settlement located along the Rio Solimoes in the northern Brazilian state of Amazonas. Accessible only from the water or air, this remote region is known for its biodiversity. Once known as Ega, the town was founded by 17th-century missionaries. Now, it serves as an ideal basecamp from which to explore the floodplains of the Amazon. Boat trips, canoeing, and hiking are some ways in which you can explore the region with its distinctive flora and fauna. Tefé also acts as a gateway for adventures into Mamiraua Reserve. The reserve includes swathes of Solimoes-Japura moist forests and the seasonally flooded Purus varzea. Besides primates such as Jurua red howler monkeys, Peruvian spider monkeys, and white uakari, the reserve is home to the collared anteater and South American coati. Around 400 species of avifauna, including toucans, harpy eagles, and hoatzin shelter in the lush tree canopy. Piranha fishing, dolphin watching, and jaguar spotting expeditions are some popular activities here.
