Paraty

Paraty is a town set on the Costa Verde, a green corridor that runs along the coastline of Rio de Janeiro state in Brazil. The town was founded in 1667 and most of the architecture has not changed for at least 250 years. Among the standouts are four beautiful churches. You will also find two colonial forts. The town’s historic center is on the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage list. Cars and trucks are banned from its cobblestoned streets except for deliveries on Wednesdays. As a result, horses and carts are a common sight. The architectural beauty of the town is matched by its natural beauty. Paraty is framed by jungle-covered mountains and surrounded by roughly 50 beaches and 65 islands. The safe waters of the bay make it one of the best places in Brazil to go diving. You can also explore the surrounding area through its network of hiking and cycling trails. The city hosts the well-known FLIP International Literary Festival in July. It has also hosted the annual Paraty Bourbon Jazz Festival since 2009.

Drive on to Toboga waterfall that cascades down over a smooth rock. For an adrenaline rush, slide down the rock for about 90 feet to splash into the natural pool at the base. Next, travel to a cachaça distillery to learn how this popular Brazilian liquor is distilled. See how it is extracted from sugarcane and aged in wooden barrels. Afterwards, make your way to a local restaurant, on the banks of the Pereque River, where you can buy yourself lunch. Ilha Grande, with its small bays and rugged landscape dotted with waterfalls and mountains, promises you the ultimate outdoor adventure. Recently designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, this breathtakingly beautiful tropical paradise gives off a rustic fishing hamlet vibe. Thanks to the maximum security prison that existed here until 1994, the island managed to remain isolated for decades, thus preserving its bounty of natural attractions. Accessible only from the water, Ilha Grande is now a state park and biological reserve. Hiking the many trails in the forest, exploring secluded beaches and coves, and diving into the crystal clear waters for a glimpse of the rich marine life are just some of the popular activities at the island. With a handful of restaurant and bars the Village of Abraao is the hub of all social activity on the island. The absence of signs of modernization such as motorized vehicles, banks or ATMs only adds to the charm of the place!
