Drive to Amboseli (4-5 hrs)

2 Nights

Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park is located in Kajiado County, Kenya. It only covers 151 sq miles but is part of the much larger Greater Amboseli ecosystem that totals some 3,088 sq miles. Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain, lies just 30 miles to the southeast and towers over the Amboseli skyline. The mountain has played a direct role in shaping the area’s landscape. The constant supply of melting water has created thriving marshes such as Enkongo Narok and Ol Tukai. The stars of the park are the elephants, which are abundant and boast some of the largest tusks in Africa. They have also been part of the longest-running study on elephant behavior in the wild, going back five decades. Aside from the elephants, you will find hippos wading in the marshes and lakes, and herds of zebra, wildebeest, and buffalo wandering the plains. Lions are the easiest of the big cats to spot while cheetahs and leopards prowl the park as well. Bird watchers will be kept busy with the more than 400 species that call the park home. In addition to the usual game drives, you can enjoy early morning or late afternoon nature walks of the area as well.

Included activities

Ol Tukai Lodge: Morning & Evening game drives

Enjoy refreshing game drives with an experienced guide at one of Kenya’s most iconic game parks. Experience the thrill of getting up-close with wildlife and discover the small wonders of nature. Your safari will also include plenty of bird watching opportunities. The Amboseli National Park is a paradise for bird lovers of all ages. While Lake Amboseli attracts flocks of flamingo, heron and kestrel during the wet season, you’re sure to spot the famed shoebill, along with bustards, sand grouse and myriad birds of prey anytime of the year!

Tawi Lodge: Private Morning, Evening, & Night Game Drives, Bushwalks, & Camel Rides

Catch sight of large herds of elephants and other wildlife on game drives, bushwalks and camel rides from Tawi Lodge. The lodge is set on a 3,000 acre private conservancy bordering Amboseli National Park, making it one the richest game areas in Kenya. You will be taken in a private vehicle on early morning game drives, when the animals tend to be active, or late afternoon game drives when the sunset turns the sky into a riot of colors. Keep your camera ready to take photographs of animals silhouetted against Mt. Kilimanjaro. Enjoy a bush sundowner on your way back from your evening game drive. You can also go on night drives in the conservancy to look for nocturnal wildlife that you otherwise would not see. Mornings are also the ideal time to enjoy a bush walk. Follow your experienced Maasai guide for a chance to smell and hear the land and its inhabitants. Learn how to track animals and discover the traditional uses of wild herbs and barks. To explore the conservancy in a novel way, take a camel ride through the bush. (Duration: half day; Time of day: morning and afternoon; Private activity; Fitness level: easy; Please bring sunscreen, hats, binoculars and a camera)
