Marrakesh, with its aura of mystery and exoticism, begs to be explored! Set out on a journey of discovery across this ancient city that has been prominent in shaping the history and culture of Morocco. The city was founded in AD 1062 by a chieftain of the Almoravid king Youssuf Ibn Tashfin. From its humble origins as a garrison of the Almoravids, desert warriors who were attached to their Islamic religion, Marrakesh today is a vibrant city where modernity meets tradition. Prepare to be dazzled by the ingenuity of ancient Andalusian craftsmen who used a blend of Saharan and African traditions to give the city its unique architectural character. The Almoravids are also credited with designing the complex system of khettara (network of underground irrigation canals) to bring water to the city from the High Atlas mountains. Many of Marrakesh’s palaces and mosques were demolished in the 12th century by those in power and new structures rose in their place, such as the Koutoubia mosque. Since then, the city has been on a roller coaster of glory and decline which has shaped its current form. Discover the colorful bustle and vibrant soul of the city of Marrakesh! Known as the ‘Red City,’ after which Morocco itself was named, Marrakech holds an aura of mystery and romanticism. Start the morning with a visit to the famous Koutubia Mosque, the largest mosque in the city, which dates back to the 12th century. Explore the Saadian Tombs near the Kasbah Mosque and admire the Italian carrara marble used throughout the mausoleum. Afterwards, stroll through the 19th century El Bahia Palace, which is built in a fusion of Islamic and Moroccan styles of architecture. Try your hand at bargaining at the souks in the heart of the old city. Find traders selling spices, shoes and leather goods. The spectacular site of Ait-Ben-Haddou is yours to discover on this trip to a UNESCO World Heritage landmark. Go on a trek up to a panoramic mountain pass in the area of Toubkal, the highest peak of the great Atlas Mountains (4.167 m). Begin from Imlil, a mountain retreat perched on a hilltop. Trek for about two hours, following a steep mule trail, till you reach the Tizi M’zik mountain pass (2.489m). Take as many breaks as you wish to rest along the way and to enjoy the glorious views. See the small villages on the sloping hillsides, near the agricultural terraces and fruit orchards – indicators of the community of Berber people living in the area.
