Tangier

Manning the Strait of Gibraltar on the Maghreb coast, Tangier has been a prosperous trading port for centuries. Its potent combination of exotic beauty, one-time status as an ‘international zone’ and crossbreed history had lent it a mysterious air of adventure and romance for ages. With its Mediterranean connections dating as far back as the Phoenician era, over time, Tangier has inspired artists and writers around the world, right from Mark Twain, Delacroix and Tennessee Williams to Paul Bowles and Henri Matisse. Today, travelers continue to flock to its shores, drawn by its rich heritage and cosmopolitan air. The old hillside medina, the view over the strait, the sultan’s palace (now converted into a museum), and the American Legation Museum are just some of the delightful sights that the city offers.

Traditional Moroccan and Andalusian flavors rise from the kitchens of this pretty highland village with dreamy turquoise walls and red-tiled roofs. Think shady alleyways, blue-washed rough-hewn stone walls hung with potted plants, and wrought iron windows that offer a peek into steep hilly lanes – Chefchaouen is all this and more. Walk in its beautiful medina and bustling bazaars selling traditional textures and colors, visit the Bab el-Ansar, or take a stroll by the Ras el-Maa. A medieval fortress and ethnographic museum are also tucked by the kasbah. The Seat of Sebbanin and the 15th-century mosque with its soaring minarets are worth a visit too.

Akchour

Akchour, a small village located about an hour’s drive from Chefchaouen, gives you a taste of life in the Moroccan countryside. Surrounded by rolling mountains, deep gorges, and cascading waterfalls, this hamlet is slowly turning into a tourist magnet, where you can get a glimpse into the Berber way of life. The hiking and trekking routes that originate in the village add to its popularity. From here, you can hike up to the natural rock formation uniting two cliffs, known as The God’s Bridge. Another well-used trail leads to the picturesque Akchour waterfall that tumbles over jagged rocks to collect in a turquoise pool. The hamlet’s proximity to Talassemtane National Park provides access to a larger network of well-marked trails for hikes that are a few hours or even days long. The park is home to the rare Moroccan fir trees and endemic species of wildlife such as the Barbary macaque. For more adventure, turn to zip lining and tree climbing. While here, don’t forget to sample the tagines at one of the stalls in the village or along the hiking paths.

Fes

Fes, or Fez, the grandest royal city created by Morocco’s early Muslim rulers in the 9th century, is the country’s cultural capital and spiritual heart. This UNESCO World Heritage site houses the world’s oldest university! Fez had replaced Marrakech as the capital of the Merinid kingdom during the height of its political influence in the 13th–14th centuries. Medieval mosques, private villas and madrassas like the 14th-century Bou Inania and Al Attarine, designed with elaborate timber and tile work, still adorn the town. Imagine narrow alleyways lined with colorful stalls, donkey carts laden with goods competing with local crowds, and the tantalizing aroma of sizzling kebabs and freshly baked breads rising from the souks. Walking down blind alleys bustling with people, expect to suddenly come up against an oasis of calm, a delicate stone fountain, or an intricately carved doorway to some medieval palace or fondouk….
