The city was founded in AD 1062 by a chieftain of the Almoravid king Youssuf Ibn Tashfin. From its humble origins as a garrison of the Almoravids, desert warriors who were attached to their Islamic religion, Marrakesh today is a vibrant city where modernity meets tradition. Prepare to be dazzled by the ingenuity of ancient Andalusian craftsmen who used a blend of Saharan and African traditions to give the city its unique architectural character. The Almoravids are also credited with designing the complex system of khettara (network of underground irrigation canals) to bring water to the city from the High Atlas mountains. Many of Marrakesh’s palaces and mosques were demolished in the 12th century by those in power and new structures rose in their place, such as the Koutoubia mosque. Since then, the city has been on a roller coaster of glory and decline which has shaped its current form. From the medieval ambiance of the ancient medina (old walled part of town) to the glitzy bars, restaurants, and art galleries in Guéliz the French quarter of the city, see it all in a day!
