Its German colonial past has lingered, especially in language and architecture, yet it is fused with a modern style. Whilst some call the city provincial, it also has a cosmopolitan flare. Enjoy traditional German dishes, bread and beer, and even celebrate the German carnival. Explore the center, Independence Avenue, by foot. Visit the Tintenpalast (Ink Palace), which houses Namibia’s parliament, the 19th century Lutheran Christuskirche (Christ Church), the Alte Feste (Old Fort), and the National Museum.

Experience a guided nature drive and a stunning sunset in the Kalahari. Stand atop one of the dunes to watch the beautiful play of burnt orange colors as the sun sets on the desert. The sand dunes of Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert are often referred to as the highest dunes in the world. Correct or not, Sossusvlei is surely one of the most spectacular sights in Namibia. Located in the Namib Naukluft, the largest conservation area in Africa, and fourth largest in the world, we recommend you view Sossusvlei at sunrise and sunset when the colors are strong and constantly changing, allowing for wonderful photographic opportunities. The midday heat is intense and best spent in the shade. Sesriem Canyon, close to the the campsite, is another popular attraction.

Learn about the colonial history of the town that was founded in 1892 as the main harbor for German southwest Africa. Visit the National Marine Aquarium that features aquatic creatures from the cold Benguela Current in the south Atlantic Ocean. Drop by the Woermannhaus with the prominent Damara tower, and now a public library. Run through glimpses of Namibian history in the Swakopmund Museum. The former homeland of the Damara people, it is an arid place of imagination with its bizarre rock formations across a stunningly beautiful mountainous landscape. Near Twyfellfontein, you can witness the ancient rock formations and some 2,000 petroglyphs (engravings) that date back to 3,300 BC. From the Burnt Mountain and Organ Pipes to the Doros Crater, these once invoked the shamanistic rituals of the people. Explore the petrified forest for your own chance at glancing this region’s past!

Personalized Petrified Forest and the Organ Pipes Tour

Embark on this self-guided discovery tour of two unusual geological attractions in the Damaraland region. Set off at your own pace and make your way to the outskirts of Khorixas town near the Burnt Mountain. Follow the path that leads to a small gorge that is home to a 328 feet (100 m) stretch of unique basalt rock formations that resemble organ pipes. Get a good look at the cluster that is believed to be 150 million years old. Afterward, travel the distance to the petrified forest where you can find tree trunks that are up to 111 feet (34 m) in length. Look up close at the 50-odd tree trunks that are thought to be 260 million years old. Listen as your local guide speaks about how the trees are likely to have been swept downstream to this spot in a massive flood. Explore biodiversity in a wetland! A narrow strip of land in the extreme northeast of Namibia, the Caprivi Strip is about 400 kilometers long. This is one of the wettest regions of Namibia, not only because it rains a lot here but also because of the three rivers that flow through here – the Okavango, the Kwando and the Zambezi. Several reserves have been built in the area to protect the wild animals, which walk around freely inside the reserves as there are no fences to restrict their movement. The region offers you fantastic game drives and incredible mokoro or dugout canoe rides.

Eastern Caprivi

Namibia’s Caprivi region is one of Southern Africa’s emerging wildlife spots, just waiting to be explored. A little off the beaten track, Eastern Caprivi is largely a river country, enclosed by the Zambezi, Kwando, Linyanti, and Chobe rivers. It is marked by mopane woodlands, camelthorn, Natal mahogany and mangosteen. The flood plains, oxbow lakes and conserved swampland were once home to one of the greatest concentration of wildlife in Namibia till heavy poaching over the last couple of decades ravaged the land. The good news is that the wildlife has been slowly returning in recent years. The best game viewing season is during the dry winter months of June to October. You will find herds of elephants, hippos, buffalo, zebras, kudu and impala in abundance, together with crocodiles, warthogs, and baboons. Eastern Caprivi is a great destination for bird lovers too, with waterfront flocks of egrets, herons, cranes, and plovers, nesting by its many rivers, lakes and watering holes.

Our game drive guides were exceptional in getting us to where the animals were so we could enjoy seeing cheetah cubs at play while mom watched, lion cubs playing while a group of lioness’s napped in the sun and two male lions did the same. The most incredible sight was watching a group of 6 lioness’s separate a female buffalo and her calf and going on to taking them both down. It was like watching a Nat Geo film but we were there within 30 yards to watch. Our accommodations were top notch, staff everywhere we were were exceptional, and the settings were all different but wonderful. Our trip coordinator was in constant contact just to check in and see if there was anything we needed her to do. The Trip Agent App, our first time using it, was a very nice feature and was so much easier to use rather than pulling out a hard copy of the trip to find the answer to our questions. I wasn’t sure if I would use it or not but became dependent on it. Traveling doesn’t get any better if you travel with Enchanting Travels. We will be back!
