Marrakesh

Marrakesh, with its aura of mystery and exoticism, begs to be explored! Set out on a journey of discovery across this ancient city that has been prominent in shaping the history and culture of Morocco. The city was founded in AD 1062 by a chieftain of the Almoravid king Youssuf Ibn Tashfin. From its humble origins as a garrison of the Almoravids, desert warriors who were attached to their Islamic religion, Marrakesh today is a vibrant city where modernity meets tradition. Prepare to be dazzled by the ingenuity of ancient Andalusian craftsmen who used a blend of Saharan and African traditions to give the city its unique architectural character. The Almoravids are also credited with designing the complex system of khettara (network of underground irrigation canals) to bring water to the city from the High Atlas mountains. Many of Marrakesh’s palaces and mosques were demolished in the 12th century by those in power and new structures rose in their place, such as the Koutoubia mosque. Since then, the city has been on a roller coaster of glory and decline which has shaped its current form. From the medieval ambiance of the ancient medina (old walled part of town) to the glitzy bars, restaurants, and art galleries in Guéliz the French quarter of the city, see it all in a day!

Your chauffeur will drive you from Marrakech to Taroudant in a private vehicle (Duration: 4 hrs)

1 Night

Taroudant

Visiting Taroudant as part of an Anti-Atlas circuit including Tafraoute and perhaps Tiznit, or on your way south from the desert to Agadir and the Atlantic Coast. There is enough to see and do in the city for a day or two, but the best thing about Taroudant is its location in the fertile Souss Valley and at the foothills of the Anti-Atlas Mountains, which are teaming with Berber culture including ancient granaries, ages-old Koranic schools and lush green agricultural terraces.

Your chauffeur will drive you from Taroudant to Tafraoute in a private vehicle (Duration: 3 hrs)

1 Night

Tafraoute

Tucked deep within the Ameln Valley, the scenic little town of Tafraoute mesmerizes with the stunning contrast of verdant palm groves against red granite mountains. Lush oases with date palms and olive groves greet visitors, alongside iconic landmarks like Le Roche Bleu (The Blue Rocks), La Tete du Lion (The Head of the Lion) and agadirs or granaries located on the top of hills. Largely free from hustling guides and eager shopkeepers, Tafraoute is the perfect place to relax or explore at your own pace. Pamper yourself at the Old Hammam behind the main market, or wander through bustling Wednesday souk for local crafts in leather and wood as well as charming trinkets in silver. The town is also known for the rich flavors of Amlou, which you can sample while dining at its traditional restaurants.

Agadir

Give in to the laid back vibe of Agadir, the most popular destination in southern Morocco. This city has much to offer the beach lover! Laze around on its clean sun-kissed sands, a drink in hand from one of the sea-facing bars. If you choose to step away from the beaches, visit the Souk el-had – a sprawling marketplace where you can find pretty much anything, including spices, jewelry, souvenirs and Morocco’s famous argan oil. Also make time for the Agadir Kasbah – comprising of the ruins of an old fortress atop a hill – for a splendid view of the city. You could also take a camel ride in the vicinity of the Kasbah, or even near the beach. Agadir is known for its moderate climate and attracts plenty of visitors during winter.

Day 8 – 10

Your chauffeur will drive you from Agadir to Essaouira in a private vehicle (Duration: 3 hrs)

2 Nights

Essaouira

Essaouira, a picturesque coastal town overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, is yours to discover. This easygoing fishing port dating back to the 17th century is where Orson Wells filmed Othello! This charming town is also credited with playing host to guests such as Jimmy Hendrix and the Rolling Stones. While the town is not as historically relevant as Fes or Marrakech, you can see glimpses of Portuguese influence in the white painted buildings of the old walled area. In the 18th century synagogue, you can find evidence of what had once been a thriving Jewish community. In the week preceding Rosh Hashanah, witness the annual pilgrimage to the tomb of Rabbi Chaim Pinto in the vast Jewish cemetery adjacent to the ocean. Essaouira being a hub of artists, you will see plenty of handmade works of art in the modest souk. The windy conditions in this town make it a great destination to try out windsurfing and kite surfing. You can also explore the town on camels and horses or go on quad bike excursions. Lunch at the port with fresh fish cooked right in front of you, is yet another highlight of Essaouira!
