Karoo Tours
Discover an oasis! The Karoo takes its name from the bushmen who once roamed, hunted and grazed this wide land They called the land ‘kurù’, meaning ‘dry’ or ‘rough’. While it appears vast and empty at first sight, the Karoo is full of delightful eccentricities waiting to be discovered. One of the main towns in the Karoo is Graaff-Reinet, a delightful oasis surrounded by semi-desert. The town’s wide streets have more national monument buildings than any other town in South Africa. Nearby is a spectacular natural wonder known as the Valley of Desolation, where the ground falls away dramatically, and strange dolomite pinnacles rise like rockets from a launching pad.
