Aurangabad was named after the Mughal emperor, Aurangzeb, and became the capital of the dynasty in the 18th century. It was formerly part of the Princely State of Hyderabad, during British Colonial rule. Aurangabad is widely renowned as being the gateway to ancient rock cut splendor, with the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Ajanta and Ellora Caves in close proximity. This booming city became a center for silk and cotton textile production, and several ginning factories still exist today. It’s also home to a treasure chest of art within its three major museums.
