Delhi

Delhi, the capital of India, has a long and storied history that goes back 3,000 years. It is one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, and has been the beating heart of many empires, from the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughals to the British. Each one has left its imprint on Delhi’s architecture, creating a varied and multicultural cityscape. Three UNESCO World Heritage sites span the centuries and are arguably the highlights. The 12th-century Qutub Minar is an early example of Delhi’s Islamic heritage. Humayun’s Tomb, built in the 16th century, features a garden mausoleum with a striking octagonal design. Finally, there is the iconic sandstone Red Fort, or Lal Quila, built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the 17th century. Today, Delhi is split between ‘Old Delhi’, with its narrow streets, bazaars, and historical monuments, and ‘New Delhi’, with its wide boulevards and grand government buildings. One thing they both have in common is delicious street food ranging from chaat and kebabs to flaky parathas, making Delhi a food lover’s paradise.

Agra

Agra is most famous today for being the home of the Taj Mahal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the seven wonders of the world. But there is more to Agra than the Taj. The city was the capital of the Mughal Empire under five different emperors. Emperor Akbar built the Agra Fort, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, in the 16th century. Made of red sandstone, it was the seat of the royal Mughal government. You will also find the so-called ‘Baby Taj’ on the left bank of the Yamuna river. The nickname refers to the Tomb of I’timād-ud-Daulah, commissioned by Nur Jahan, wife of the emperor Jehangir, for her father, Mirza Ghiyas Beg. Jehangir also built Sikandra, a tomb complex for his father Akbar, which sprawls across 119 acres. The city is well connected by air, road and rail. Agra also hosts the Taj Mahotsav, a cultural festival and craft fair, in February every year.

Kanha is the undisputed king of wildlife parks, being the largest national park in Central /West India and one of the best maintained. Kanha is blessed with an amazing diversity of sal and bamboo forests, rolling grasslands and meandering streams, where writer Rudyard Kipling took inspiration from the landscapes and wildlife, to create his global success, The Jungle Book. Energetic, colorful and resilient, Mumbai is both the financial and entertainment capital of India, and is home to many billionaires and millionaires. Yet it’s also a booming metropolis of about 20 million people and India’s most populated city! You will never be bored as Mumbai is a city that never sleeps, with its fascinating colonial heritage, plethora of shopping avenues, vibrant nightlife, and some of the country’s oldest restaurants.

Half Day Visit to Elephanta Caves

Venture to the extraordinary Elephanta Caves, a complex of ancient rock-cut cave temples that sit proudly on Elephanta Island, which is an hour’s ferry ride from Mumbai. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, these intricately carved caves date back to 600AD, although there is little history explaining the island. Some locals believe the caves are a natural testament to the Hindu faith. Explore the tranquil and picturesque island, teeming with green foliage and scampering monkey, before visiting the caves. There is much to witness, from the great Trimurti Sadashiva (or Maheshmurti) a cave that depicts the three faces of Shiva, to a hall with 20 pillars, and an enshrined Shivalingam (a phallic symbol of fertility). Kindly note that Elephanta Caves are closed on Mondays. (Duration 4 hours).

Half Day Highlights of Mumbai

Venture to the waterfront and witness the historic Gateway of India, built during the British rule. Drive by the world’s most expensive real estate along Marine Drive, also known as the Queen’s Necklace, as the streetlights resemble a string of pearls at night. Discover the plethora of colonial architecture including the High Court, Mumbai University, Flora Fountain, Asiatic Library, Prince of Wales Museum, Municipal Corporation Building and the fascinating, fully-functioning Victoria Terminus Railway Station. Whilst the building is closed to the public, you can glimpse the Parsi Tower of Silence with its circling vultures.
