Akchour, a small village located about an hour’s drive from Chefchaouen, gives you a taste of life in the Moroccan countryside. Surrounded by rolling mountains, deep gorges, and cascading waterfalls, this hamlet is slowly turning into a tourist magnet, where you can get a glimpse into the Berber way of life. The hiking and trekking routes that originate in the village add to its popularity. From here, you can hike up to the natural rock formation uniting two cliffs, known as The God’s Bridge. Another well-used trail leads to the picturesque Akchour waterfall that tumbles over jagged rocks to collect in a turquoise pool. The hamlet’s proximity to Talassemtane National Park provides access to a larger network of well-marked trails for hikes that are a few hours or even days long.
The park is home to the rare Moroccan fir trees and endemic species of wildlife such as the Barbary macaque. For more adventure, turn to zip lining and tree climbing. While here, don’t forget to sample the tagines at one of the stalls in the village or along the hiking paths.
