Lugano is a lovely lakeside city that is set against the mountains and makes for a scenic holiday spot. The mild climate and palm and olive trees give this settlement, which is located in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland, a distinctly Mediterranean vibe. The many peaks and trails offer ample opportunities for hiking and mountain biking expeditions. Those seeking a more sedate pace can go on leisurely boat cruises on Lake Lugano. History buffs have plenty to see and do here, as there are over half-a-dozen heritage sites including three churches. The many museums promise hours of happy viewing as do the numerous art galleries.
