Established in the 1940s as a highway construction camp, Glennallen is a small town that sits along the Glenn Highway, close to where it intercepts the Richardson Highway in Alaska. It primarily serves a jumping-off point for those looking for adventure in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, the largest national park in the United States. As a result, there are plenty of guides, outfitters and tour companies to be found in town, who provide adventures from hiking to rafting to wildlife excursions in a jet boat to snowmobile tours in the winter. The town’s proximity to the Copper river, which is home to the famous Copper River red salmon, makes it a beacon for anglers as well. In January, crowds flock here for the start of the Copper Basin 300 Dog Sled Race.
