Visit to Puñihuil Penguin Colony & Ancud during drive to Chiloé Hotel

After a drive of about an hour and fifteen minutes south of Puerto Varas take the local ferry across the Chaco Channel to Chiloé Island. After a short drive you’ll reach the fisherman’s town of Ancud where you can visit the local fish and craft market. Continue on along the coast to the Puñihuil Penguin Colony, the only shared nesting site of both Magellanic and Humboldt penguins. Mid-September to mid-March is the nesting season of the penguins when you will be able to see these beautiful animals. Take a half hour navigation around small islands where the penguins nest. After a drive of about an hour and fifteen minutes south of Puerto Varas take the local ferry across the Chaco Channel to the picturesque Chiloé island. Head south on the island visiting its characteristic small fishing villages which seem to be lost in time, with their rustic homes, traditional fishing boats and friendly inhabitants. Explore the port city of Dalcahue and the capital city of Castro both known for their historic wooden churches. Constructed by the Jesuits in the 18th and 19th centuries, the churches of Chiloé are not representative of classical Spanish colonial architecture, instead being constructed of local timber and featuring wood shingles. A rich mix of European culture and the local Chilote traditions, sixteen of the churches on Chiloé are an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
