Temuco is aptly known as the gateway to the stunningly beautiful Lake District region of the country. It is also the closest city to the popular tourist destinations of Pucon and Villarrica. Tucked into a valley with the Andes mountains in the distance making for a picturesque backdrop, this bustling city was once home to eminent Nobel laureates Pablo Neruda and Gabriela Mistral. The city’s strong link to the indigenous Mapuche ethnic group is yet another claim to fame. Thus, it is quite common to come across members of this ethnic group within the city limits, especially when they arrive to peddle their crafts and arts at the local markets. This city offers a few attractions such as a museum and a tree-lined plaza.
There are also plenty of great restaurants and pubs to savor delicious food. A short drive out of town will take you to Conguillìo National Park, known for Llaima, an active volcano.
