Brazil’s Wildlife, Waterfalls and Beach

Enjoy the biodiversity of the Pantanal wetlands on this adventurous getaway at Araras Eco Lodge. You will be picked up by a shared vehicle from the airport or your hotel in Cuiabá and driven to the property. Travel for about 87 miles, with stops along the Transpantaneira park road to view the local flora and fauna. On reaching the lodge, check into your comfortable accommodation and relax. In the late afternoon, hike to an observation tower that is 40 feet high to watch the sunset. After dinner, set off on a guided night walk in search of the nocturnal animals that inhabit the region. If you are lucky, you could spot Pantanal deer, alligators and capybaras. As you walk, look up at the constellations that dot the southern hemisphere sky. The next day, relish a hearty breakfast before you set off on a photo safari to remote corners of the wetlands, in a specially adapted open vehicle. Over the next couple of hours, keep an eye out for various species of wildlife along Transpantaneira crossway and other roads that bisect the Pantanal. Your knowledgeable guide will point out the peculiarities and contrasts of the vegetation as you watch for anteaters, tapirs, and swamp deer. Later, head out in a canoe to look for aquatic species and birds. You could try your hand at fishing for piranha too. In the dry months, enjoy lunch by the riverside and in the wet season, the table is set indoors at the lodge. After lunch, head to the 82 feet high Howler Monkey Tower to catch the sunset. Relish dinner and retire to your room for a good night’s rest. Begin the third day of your wilderness getaway with a hike along the Rondon trail to reach the 40 feet high Tuiuiu Tower. Savor lunch at the lodge before you go horseback riding to explore hard-to-reach areas of the Pantanal. Back at the lodge, tuck into dinner and settle down by the fireside for a lecture or slide presentation. On your last day here, wake up early for a sunrise hike. Later, check out and transfer to Cuiabá for your onward journey. Admire the beauty of the river and the park learning about the regional flora and fauna, and if you are lucky perhaps even catch sight of an alligator or a monkey. Gain a deep perspective of the breathtaking waterfalls, recently named one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Three sets of trails and walkways allow you to explore the natural beauty of the falls and the surrounding jungle as you walk through the national park. On the lower circuit take in a view of the falls from below, feeling part of the natural surroundings, and sensing their great magnitude. The upper circuit takes you above the falls where you get a different perspective of the same waterfalls you just saw on the lower circuit. Few neighborhoods in Rio offer the physical beauty, history and charm of Santa Teresa. Located high upon the hills of the city, Santa Teresa overlooks virtually the entire city, including downtown and Guanabara Bay. Santa Teresa is home to the famous ‘bonde’, the street cars of the early 20th century. The neighborhood also offers some of Rio’s most exciting cultural and artistic activities, as well as wonderful restaurants. Enjoy a delicious lunch at one of Santa Teresa’s culinary hotspots specializing in traditional Brazilian food (not included in rate). Itinerary: We will leave the hotel by metro and stop at the Catete subway station to get a taxi to the ‘Bonde’ (station, where we will proceed across the Lapa Arches and up the hill to the charming neighborhood of Santa Teresa itself. Leave the ‘Bonde’ at Largo dos Guimarães to explore the innumerous cultural houses, galleries and pick our favorite spot for a delicious lunch (not included in rate). We will descend the hill by ‘Bonde’, once again, to the nearest metro station to return to our hotel. Important note: the tram is out of operation for a complete overhaul, until the return of its operation we will go up to Santa Teresa by car/van that are following the route of the tram. Begin the tour by riding the cog-wheel train up Corcovado Mountain to reach the spectacular view at the summit. Marvel at the Christ the Redeemer statue, built at the top of the mountain and gaze down on the entire city of Rio de Janeiro. Next visit the famous Sugarloaf Mountain, reaching the top by cable car.
