Encompassed by verdant tea plantations and perched atop a steep ridge, the town offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Darjeeling was one of the best-known summer capitals during the British Raj. Even today, the lofty architecture and daily lifestyle bear testimony to Darjeeling’s colonial heritage – including high teas in the afternoon! The landscape has been shaped by its aromatic and flavorful black tea which is a world-renowned export. With a stunning backdrop formed by the majestic Himalayas, Darjeeling has yet another gem to offer – the narrow meter gauge Himalayan toy train that rolls through the valleys along Teesta River to the foothills.

Gangtok is a bustling, cosmopolitan town in the eastern Himalayas, where mist-covered mountains dominate the skyline. The capital of the former independent Kingdom of Sikkim, until its merger with India in 1975, Gangtok retains a distinct cultural identity shaped by its Tibetan Buddhist heritage and position as a melting pot of Nepali, Bhutia and Lepcha communities. Daily life here unfolds along winding roads lined with colorful prayer wheels, which locals spin as they pass. Shopkeepers arrange fresh momos and thukpa in steaming displays, and the scent of cardamom tea drifts from roadside stalls. Visit the serene Rumtek Monastery, one of Tibetan Buddhism’s most important seats outside Tibet. You could also take in sweeping views of the Kanchenjunga range towering in the distance. Gangtok also serves as a gateway for travelers exploring Sikkim’s alpine lakes, rhododendron forests and ancient Buddhist monasteries.
