Wilpattu Safari

Wilpattu or Willu-pattu (Land of Lakes) is a national park in Sri Lanka, situated just 30 km west of Anuradhapura and 26 km north of Puttalam, while Colombo is about 180 km northward. The hallmark characteristic here is the presence of natural lakes – natural, rainwater filled sand-rimmed water basins or depressions. The park (Sri Lanka’s oldest and largest) is a famous draw for leopards and sloth bears, as well as Asian elephants, barking deer and wild pig. Endemic birds like Ceylon junglefowl, Ceylon woodshrike and black-capped bulbul inhabit the river areas. Myriad color butterflies like the great eggfly, great orange tip and the blue mormon are a delight to watch.
