Discover the many marvels of Gal Oya National Park, one of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful wildlife sanctuaries. Located 3.5 hours from Kandy, the park area includes the magnificent Senanayake reservoir, the country’s largest man-made lake. Make use of the jeep and boat safaris offered here to spot a plethora of animals and birds, including deer, water buffalo, wild boar, pelicans and herons. The park’s most famous inhabitants, however, are its elephants. Much has been written about the herds of elephants swimming from one small island to another in the lake, a fascinating sight which you are likely to witness during the course of your boat safari. One of the best known islands here is Bird Island, which as the name suggests is home to a large variety of birds, making it a most interesting destination for visitors to the park.
