The oldest colonial city of South America, Santa Marta was established by the Spanish in the 16th century. The area around the old city dates back to the ancient Tayronas, who ruled the region before the Spanish invasion. Like most colonial cities in Colombia, Santa Marta too embraces the old and the new. Most of the old colonial downtown area is pedestrianized, centered around the lovely Parque de los Novios, which is within walking distance of the ocean and bay. Santa Marta is also an excellent gateway to a host of wonderful destinations around the Sierra Nevada and the Caribbean Sea coast, such as the Tayrona National Park and the beautiful beaches of Bahia Concha. The city boasts popular nightclubs and restaurants that regularly spill out into the streets with Latino music and dancing lasting until dawn!
