Bentota offers a pristine beachside experience in southwestern Sri Lanka. The coast is lined with swaying palms by the azure Arabian Sea. Shrouded in legend, Bentota is said to have derived its name from the mysterious demon Bem, who held sway over the tota (river bank). Happily, it’s the sunny skies and pleasant climate that hold sway over Bentota these days! The town is popular with visitors who appreciate the luxurious hotels offering beachside comfort and Ayurveda enthusiasts alike. With sparkling coral reefs, there are plenty of opportunities for diving, snorkeling and other watersports, and a host of restaurants that serve almost everything under the sun, including an abundant catch of the day!
Saman Villas is magnificently perched on a rocky headland dividing two long seemingly endless, surf-swept un spoilt beaches of golden sand, backed by dense green coconut plantations, in the quiet-sleepy fishing village of Aturuwella in Bentota.
Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery where you can see five different species of turtles, namely the Green, Hawksbill, Loggerhead, Leatherback and Olive Ridley awaits for a one and a half hour long visit. Villagers and fishermen collect eggs that the hatchery buys. Kept in tanks until they are hatched, the young turtles are released into the sea at night. Kosgoda Hatchery, which is supported by the Hasselblad Foundation, has released in excess of 1.7 millions of turtles into the wild to date.
