Mexico Safety Tips
Mexico is a large country and in order to make the most of your trip, chances are that you will find yourself visiting several cities. It’s important that you pack light so you can keep tabs on all your luggage at all times. With a largely tropical climate everywhere, you can easily make do with lightweight clothing everywhere along with a rain jacket and sturdy boots if you are traveling during the rainy season or wish to go hiking.
While you may wish to carry some valuables and jewelry to wear on your trip, we advise you to keep this to a minimum. Even while you travel, always ensure that your valuables and money are safely locked away in your hotel’s safe.
Large cities and tourist destinations offer a large number of ATMs and most hotels and restaurants accept credit cards so you need not carry a large amount of money with you. Some few smaller denomination notes should be enough for tipping or any other minor expenses that you may have. Remember not to use ATMs in deserted areas or at night.
Please avoid displaying large amounts of cash or your valuables in public. While pickpocketing is not common everywhere, it is nevertheless known to happen in some public areas so we advise you to carry a small money pouch that you can keep strapped to yourself under your clothing. It is best that you don’t keep your wallet in your back pocket.
Never leave your baggage with people who are unknown to you except for your Enchanting Travels guide or hotel staff.
Avoid discussing your itinerary with strangers or disclose how much money you are carrying. Strangers who appear overly friendly or offer a service without being asked are best avoided. Avoid sharing your personal details, phone numbers or the contact of your friends and family with those unknown to you.
Try not to travel at night but if you must, always ask your hotel staff to call a taxi for you. Hailing a taxi at an unknown location or sharing a ride with other passengers unknown to you is not advisable. If your Enchanting Travels chauffeur or guide are not with you, look for official taxi stands from where you can safely take a cab.
Avoid drinking too much alcohol with others unknown to you. Remember, recreational drugs are illegal in Mexico and can lead to severe consequences.
