Oslo

Oslo is the capital of Norway and the green capital of Europe. With an urban skyline of marvelous modern architecture, numerous public parks and open green spaces, the city is a traveler’s delight. Sitting at the head of the Oslofjord, with the snowy slopes and alpine forests of Nordmarka looming in the background, Oslo offers picture-perfect visuals of northern waterways, arctic islands, and snowcapped mountains. Apart from being a winter sports paradise, Oslo is the city of Edvard Munch and Henrik Ibsen, making it a haven for art and culture lovers. The city is dotted with numerous museums, art galleries and parks, with the main highlight being the popular Vigeland Park and museum with Vigeland’s sculpture. The waterfront fort and former prison of Akershus Fortress are worth a visit, as is the Viking Ship Museum with its display of 9th century Viking longboats. The official residence of the Norwegian royal family is open to the public in the summers. Not surprisingly, Oslo also has an electric nightlife. Neighborhood cafes and trendy eateries serve delicious fusion food that marries traditional Nordic cuisine with global favorites. Enjoy your sushi along with a platter of polse (local hot dogs) and a jug of local beer.

Copenhagen

Straddling the eastern coast of the island of Zealand, Copenhagen stands as Denmark’s capital and the cultural, political and economic heart of the region. The city carries centuries of royal heritage — from the 17th-century Rosenborg Castle, where the Danish crown jewels rest beneath vaulted ceilings, to the commanding Christiansborg Palace, which houses the Danish Parliament on foundations laid in the 12th century. There is also the waterfront district of Nyhavn, lined with painted merchant townhouses dating to the 1670s.

The city has built a global reputation as a world capital of design and architecture, threading that sensibility into everything from its restaurants to its urban infrastructure. Dedicated cycling highways carry locals and visitors alike through a compact, walkable center. The New Nordic culinary movement took root here as well, and its Michelin-recognized dining rooms are not to be missed

The Christianshavn canals offer a quieter counterpoint to the energy of the center, where narrow boats drift past low-roofed buildings and waterside cafes. Tivoli Gardens, a historic amusement park, has drawn visitors since 1843. Copenhagen is also where you can experience the quintessential Danish feeling of ‘hygge’, allowing you to immerse yourself in peace, comfort and coziness.

Stockholm

Built across 14 islands where Lake Malaren meets the Baltic Sea, Stockholm has served as Sweden’s capital since the 13th century. The city, with its gorgeous landscape and waterfront promenades, features a contrasting skyline of royal monuments and contemporary design. Gamla Stan, the old town, anchors the city’s historic core. Its narrow streets are lined with amber and ochre facades, leading to the Royal Palace, one of Europe’s largest working royal residences. Across the water, the Vasa Museum preserves a 17th-century warship salvaged intact from the harbor floor. Summer stretches the day to nearly 18 hours of light, leaving time to board a ferry and trace the Stockholm Archipelago, where you will see forested islands and open water in every direction. Back in the city, ABBA The Museum captures a defining chapter of Swedish pop culture, while the neighborhoods surrounding it pulse with Nordic fashion and design. There is also the famed Nobel Prize Museum, and the 68 miles of the subway network that showcases art and sculptures making it the ‘World’s longest art exhibit’.

Helsinki

Helsinki, the Finnish capital and Scandinavian design capital, stands by the shores of the Gulf of Finland. This arctic city showcases magnificent architecture and urban design. Byzantine, neoclassical, and medieval Russian influences make for a unique cityscape. Helsinki is also a haven for contemporary design, found in the Musiikkitalo concert hall, the Kiasma museum of contemporary art, and the magnificent rock-carved church of the Temppeliaukio. A trip to Helsinki is incomplete without visiting its Design District, which is home to the Design Museum. If you’re a fan of avant-garde Finnish design, you’ll be thrilled with the creative glassware, textiles, and home fashion that spill out from the many stylish boutiques and galleries. With its arctic islands, sea beaches, parks, and public gardens, Helsinki also offers wonderful natural vistas. Ferry rides from the old Market Square to Suomenlinna, a UNESCO World Heritage site with walking trails, make for a delightful getaway for nature lovers. Adventure seekers flock to the city for hiking trips to the surrounding alpine forests and for winter sports like snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and ice skating. When in town, feast on traditional Finnish flavors like grilled salmon and arctic char cooked with wild mushrooms and fresh cloudberries or lingonberries. What’s not to love?
