At sunrise and sunset, you can see a surreal reflection of this temple in the nearby pool of water! After exploring this gorgeous temple, make your way to the walled city of Angkor Thom where you can find the splendid Bayon temple and other monuments. Saunter on to the Ta Phrom temple that sits tucked within huge fig and silk cotton trees and is known as the jungle temple. Set off early in the morning for this 7th century capital of the Upper Chenla region, which lies amid the Tonle Sap Lake and the Sen River. Expect to encounter the ancient ruins of nearly a 100 brick temples scattered among a thick tropical forest. Drink in the mysterious ambiance of the ruined jungle complex, as if taken right out of a boy’s adventure story. After exploring the temple grounds and the surrounding jungles at a leisurely pace, return to your hotel. Kratie, pronounced kra-cheh, is one of four provinces in northeastern Cambodia. Located far enough away from popular destinations to attract the crowds, due to its relatively remote location, it is an interesting spot if you are looking for some tranquility.

After a hearty breakfast, set out to see the rare Irrawaddy dolphins in the Mekong River. Drive down to the river for a guided private boat ride across the waters to watch the dolphins at play in their natural habitat. Besides the nearly 60 dolphins that inhabit these waters, you are likely to spot some rare birds. Get glimpses of the locals casting their fishing nets, selling their wares in the market, or pursuing a game of football. Step off the boat to explore the former colonial town of Kratie, known for its beautiful promenade and buildings which are remnants of the French era. Enjoy the seaside feel of the town as you amble through the local market. Drop into one of the many small bars and pubs that line the street before heading back to your hotel. Mondulkiri, otherwise known as a the ‘Meeting of the Hills’, is located within the eastern highlands of Cambodia, and it is not only the country’s largest provinces, it is also the most sparsely populated and boasts a uniquely cool climate – in fact it can get chilly at night.

Set off in the morning from Kratie for Mondulkiri that is known for its rescued elephants, spectacular waterfalls, fragrant coffee plantations, and fruit orchards. As you drive on, you’ll be amazed at the manner in which the landscape transforms from the flat plains into mountainous jungle scenes. Enjoy a snack or lunch at the rest stop along the way before heading for the Tree Ocean Lookout which is a vantage point offering panoramic views of the rainforests along the mountainside. Drive on to the serene premises of Dob Kromom Hilltop Pagoda. Soak in the tranquility at this Buddhist temple sitting high on the mountain. Continue to your hotel and enjoy the rest of the day with a refreshing swim in the pool or some biking. Spend some time having high tea in the picnic area if relaxation is what you are after. Half Day Visit to Elephant Valley Project

Experience the Elephant Valley Project, a sanctuary for retired captive Asian elephants that cares for them in their natural habitat. This NGO, founded by a pachyderm lover from Britain, has the wellbeing of the elephant at its heart and is unique in its conservation style. You won’t be able to ride or swim with the elephants, or watch them do tricks, however you will get an opportunity to see them interacting with one another and highlighting their more natural behavior! It is up to the elephants if they wish to say hello to their human friends as they forage in their forest and grassland home, and throw dust and mud on themselves! The trained mahouts who take care of the gentle giants are from the local community. Instead of being hand fed, which can create a dependence on the human species and also cause unnatural stress, the elephants are encouraged to graze naturally or eat what is left on the ground for them to eat. Explore the finest examples of Khmer architecture with this marvellous city tour. The Royal Palace is a grand building overlooking a tranquil plaza and still houses Cambodia’s royalty, King Sihamoni. On the south side of the palace lies the Silver Pagoda, which is aptly named as it has been crafted out of 5,329 solid silver tiles. Wander along to Wat Preah Keo Morakot, the Buddhist temple where Royal ceremonies are performed, or Wat Phnom, the namesake of the city. You can also visit The National Museum, which houses many fascinating and historical relics, and King Ang Duong Stupa, the burial site of King Norodom Sihanouk, the 20th century monarch. To respect local customs, please dress conservatively.

Half Day Tour of Killing Fields

Situated 17km from Phnom Penh, Cheung Ek became famous by the movie ‘The Killing Fields’, a graphic depiction of the horrors that took place. Now, a large memorial has been built to commemorate the 17,000 victims who died here under the reign of Khmer Rouge leader, Pol Pot. The remnants inside the memorial and the mass graves dotting the area, are a journey into Cambodia

Savor a meal to remember at the seaside town of Kep, located on Cambodia’s southern coast. The Kep Crab Market is a bustling seafood market and the fresh crab vending that goes on here is fascinating to watch and participate in. On the side of the market that adjoins the sea, you’ll catch sight of vendors casting crab cages into the water. This is about as fresh as it can get! You can choose your crabs right there – as the crab vendor hauls up his catch. Watch the crabs get cooked over woodfire on the other side of the market. Dig into the fresh, sweet meat of crabs right in the middle of the market, enjoying them with side dishes such as a chilli dip, or rice and papaya chutney. You could also go truly local and eat your crabs Cambodian style, using your hands to take them apart – a messy but immensely satisfying affair. For a slightly more elegant but no less satisfying culinary experience, pick from a row of restaurants located right next to the market for fresh seafood and crab delicacies on offer. Choosing one with a terrace will give you sweeping views of the sun, sand and sea. Afterwards, indulge your sweet tooth with coconut waffles with mango and pineapple from the many waffle vendors in the market.
