Set off early in the morning for this 7th century capital of the Upper Chenla region, which lies amid the Tonle Sap Lake and the Sen River. Expect to encounter the ancient ruins of nearly a 100 brick temples scattered among a thick tropical forest. Drink in the mysterious ambiance of the ruined jungle complex, as if taken right out of a boy’s adventure story. After a hearty breakfast, set out to see the rare Irrawaddy dolphins in the Mekong River. Drive down to the river for a guided private boat ride across the waters to watch the dolphins at play in their natural habitat. Besides the nearly 60 dolphins that inhabit these waters, you are likely to spot some rare birds. Get glimpses of the locals casting their fishing nets, selling their wares in the market, or pursuing a game of football. Step off the boat to explore the former colonial town of Kratie, known for its beautiful promenade and buildings which are remnants of the French era. Set off in the morning from Kratie for Mondulkiri that is known for its rescued elephants, spectacular waterfalls, fragrant coffee plantations, and fruit orchards. As you drive on, you’ll be amazed at the manner in which the landscape transforms from the flat plains into mountainous jungle scenes. Enjoy a snack or lunch at the rest stop along the way before heading for the Tree Ocean Lookout which is a vantage point offering panoramic views of the rainforests along the mountainside. Drive on to the serene premises of Dob Kromom Hilltop Pagoda. Soak in the tranquility at this Buddhist temple sitting high on the mountain. Half Day Visit to Elephant Valley Project
Experience the Elephant Valley Project, a sanctuary for retired captive Asian elephants that cares for them in their natural habitat. This NGO, founded by a pachyderm lover from Britain, has the wellbeing of the elephant at its heart and is unique in its conservation style. You won’t be able to ride or swim with the elephants, or watch them do tricks, however you will get an opportunity to see them interacting with one another and highlighting their more natural behavior! It is up to the elephants if they wish to say hello to their human friends as they forage in their forest and grassland home, and throw dust and mud on themselves! The trained mahouts who take care of the gentle giants are from the local community. Instead of being hand fed, which can create a dependence on the human species and also cause unnatural stress, the elephants are encouraged to graze naturally or eat what is left on the ground for them to eat. Savor a meal to remember at the seaside town of Kep, located on Cambodia’s southern coast. The Kep Crab Market is a bustling seafood market and the fresh crab vending that goes on here is fascinating to watch and participate in. On the side of the market that adjoins the sea, you’ll catch sight of vendors casting crab cages into the water. This is about as fresh as it can get! You can choose your crabs right there – as the crab vendor hauls up his catch. Watch the crabs get cooked over woodfire on the other side of the market. Dig into the fresh, sweet meat of crabs right in the middle of the market, enjoying them with side dishes such as a chilli dip, or rice and papaya chutney. You could also go truly local and eat your crabs Cambodian style, using your hands to take them apart – a messy but immensely satisfying affair. For a slightly more elegant but no less satisfying culinary experience, pick from a row of restaurants located right next to the market for fresh seafood and crab delicacies on offer. Choosing one with a terrace will give you sweeping views of the sun, sand and sea.
