From the glorious beaches of Cancun to colorful colonial towns and ancient Maya ruins in Chichen Itza, uncover the most famous highlights of Yucatan on this private Mexico trip. With your vacation ending on the pristine beaches of Isla Mujeres, there’s plenty of downtime too!
Cancun, the quintessential spring break destination, sits on the Yucatan Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo. The clear waters of the Caribbean Sea fringed by miles and miles of white, sandy beaches entice you to have some fun in the sun.
History and Adventure in Spectacular Tulum Visit the city of Tulum in Quintana Roo, two hours south of Cancun, known for its well-preserved ruins of a Mayan fortress city built in the 13th century. Park your vehicle and ride a bike or tractor to the entrance of the walled site. Enter the field of small rolling hills, and climb up a flight of steps to the top of a striking, large stone structure called El Castillo (the castle). Enjoy expansive views of the surroundings from the castle, located on a picturesque cliff off the Mexican Caribbean Sea and originally built as a watchtower for boats passing by the nearby coral reef. Learn about the history and significance of the site, including its importance as a major port city frequented by merchants from all over Mexico and Central America. Piece together what Tulum would have been like in its heyday, with a visit to other major structures including the Temple of the Frescoes, and the Temple of the Descending God. Marvel at mural paintings, stone deities, chiseled doors and other features of Mayan architecture. Follow the pathway north of the Castillo leading to a pristine white sand beach to take a dip in the turquoise sea or walk along the coast past nooks and crannies carved out of limestone cliffs. Drive up to the Xel-Ha nearby, a natural aquatic theme park with an abundance of tropical sea life, offering adventure activities, food and drink. Work up an appetite as you hand paddle along a river, cliff dive, snorkel, zip line or take a refreshing dip in a cenote. Recharge with a drink from the bar and a sumptuous Mexican buffet, and unwind on one of the hammocks in the garden as you reflect on your action-packed day and prepare to head back to your accommodation. (Duration: Full day; Please note that this includes transportation in an air-conditioned vehicle, entrance fees to the Tulum site, and an all-inclusive visit to Xel-Ha as per terms on their website. Please pack a swimsuit, water shoes, comfortable clothing, an extra change of clothes and a towel. Your sunblock and sunscreen must contain titanium oxide and zinc oxide to avoid affecting the natural balance of the ecosystem. If not, exchange it for a biodegradable product at the information booth, and retrieve it upon departure. Bring credit card or cash to buy souvenirs, get optional activities or acquire photos from your visit. This tour does not include any activity at Dolphinarium.)
Merida, the capital city of Yucatan, is a delightful melting pot of varied cultures. The narrow streets contrasted by the expansive plazas are reminiscent of the city’s Spanish colonial past.
Soaking in the Celestial Cenotes of Santa Barbara Spend a leisurely day exploring the striking Yucantán countryside with its sprawling colonial haciendas and turquoise blue cenotes. After an early breakfast at your hotel, set out to explore the stately haciendas surrounding the countryside around Santa Barbara. Learn all about their days of producing sweeteners like miel de agave and the ubiquitous tequila from the hardy agave plant or green gold, as they were called. Discover the many cenotes dotting the region on charming horse-drawn rail cars. Local communities believe cenotes to be the mythological passageways to the underworld, havens of Mayan gods in the Yucantán. The tranquil cenotes are geological sinkholes formed by the erosion of limestone bedrocks over ages to reveal the groundwater beneath. Take a leisurely lap or two in the lovely blue crystal clear waters before sitting down for a satisfying lunch at a local restaurant. Return to your hotel following lunch. (Full Day; Time of Day: Morning; Private Activity & Transfer; Fitness level: Easy; Meals included: Lunch: Note: Please wear light clothes & comfortable shoes. Please carry sun hat, shades, sunscreen, mosquito repellent. Also carry bathing suit, towel & set of dry clothes for cenotes).
