Discover the rainforest, its rich flora and fauna, and the communities it sustains. From your accommodation at the Pachira Lodge in Tortuguero, make your way by boat through the winding canals of the rainforest, listening to the sounds of some animals and sighting others. Along the way, an expert naturalist will provide you with interesting details about the flora and fauna you come across. Go on a daytime walking tour inside the Tortuguero National Park – also known as Little Amazon and located just a five-minute drive away from Pachira Lodge – to explore its biodiversity. Venture out for a guided nightwalk to catch sight of various nocturnal species. You could also go on a village tour to acquaint yourself with the local people and their culture, and of course, to taste some delicious local cuisine. There are also several other activities you can avail at an additional charge, such as the sea turtle nesting tour or the canopy tour that lets you zip-line through the forest. (Please use sunscreen, insect repellent, and comfortable attire for these activities).

Private Arenal Volcano Hike
If you’re fascinated by volcanic landscapes, this trip may be your opportunity to watch an active volcano from a perfectly safe vantage point. From your hotel, drive over to the northwestern end of the Arenal volcano, which is less than a half hour drive away. Get off ahead of the Las Coladas Trail and enjoy a leisurely hike through tropical rainforests and an old lava flow formed nearly three decades ago. Note the interesting lava formations along the trail, while your guide relates the region’s natural history. Watch out for local plant and wildlife too. If you’re lucky, you may come across a variety of primates, sloth bears, and birds, including toucans and hawks on your hike. The walking trail ends at an observation area that offers spectacular views of the volcano. Weather permitting, one can spot the fiery lava trickling down the mountain side! Watch out for the various tropical primates endemic to the park. About halfway into your trip, take a half hour break by the Third Beach. Sail out of the city on a ferry and glide smoothly under the Bridge of the Americas as you travel to Contadora Island. Step ashore and accompany your local guide onto a whale watching boat. Feel the adrenaline rush as you zoom around the islands in search of humpback whales and friendly dolphins. With the help of your naturalist guide, interpret the behavior of the mammals even as you attempt to communicate with them. Enjoy snorkeling in the clear waters off one of the islands before it is time to return to Contadora.
