Discovery Tour of Luang Prabang

Enjoy a hearty breakfast before you set off on a fascinating exploration of this UNESCO World Heritage site. Begin your day at the Royal Palace Museum with its collection of antiques and period furniture. Travel along quiet alleyways to the century old Heuan Chan Heritage House, which is a rare surviving example of pre-colonial Lao style of architecture. Stroll around the museum and sip a glass of refreshing iced tea in the gardens. Walk over to the beautiful Wat Xieng Thong, one of the most important Buddhist monasteries in the country. Wander around the temple grounds as you take in views of the exquisitely crafted low sweeping roof of the temple. Saunter across the road to Wat Khili, an 18th century temple that now houses Buddhist archives, including a historic photo exhibit. In the early afternoon, make your way to the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Center for an in-depth understanding of the ethnic heritage of the nation before heading out of town for a closer look at the weaving and textile traditions of Ban Xang Khong and Ban Xieng Lek villages. Return to town and stop by the unique Wat Visoun also known as the watermelon stupa due to its uniquely shaped dome. For your last stop of the day, pick from one of three options. Choose to climb up Mount Phousi located at the heart of the old town and enjoy panoramic views of the city as well as the mighty Mekong River topped off with a glorious sunset vista. Or, if walking is not your cup of tea, transfer to What Prabath Tai monastery and settle in to savor the spectacular sunset views over the river. Alternatively, head to the serene premises of the Wat Aham monastery where you can soak in the spiritual ambiance enhanced by the chants of monks engaged in their evening prayers. Personalized Tour of Organic Farm and Kuang Si Waterfall

Explore the countryside on this enjoyable tour that takes you to an organic farm and a picturesque waterfall. Drive to the paddy fields and try your hand at harvesting rice, the traditional way! With the help of your local farming guide, make use of rustic tools to harvest rice. Afterwards, reward yourself for your efforts with a sampling of traditional delicacies made with rice. Later in the afternoon, head to the three-tiered Kuang Si waterfall. Enjoy a picnic lunch as you watch the falls cascade into numerous pools. Stop by the Bear Rescue Center, where the staff protect and rehabilitate the rare Asiatic Black Bear before you return to Luang Prabang in the late afternoon. Your chauffeur will drive you from Luang Prabang to Phonsavan in a private vehicle. Enroute you will visit Local Forest Market & Phatang Mountain (Duration without stops: 7 hrs)

Phonsavan

2 Nights

Meaning the ‘hills of paradise’, Phonsavan is the lively new capital of Xieng Khouang Province, Laos.

Included Activities

Khmu Village, Buddha Cave & Old Russian Tank Visits (en route from Luang Prabang)

Be fetched from your hotel by your guide at about 0800hrs and drive to Xiengkhuang, famous for the ‘Plain of Jars’. Follow a twisty mountain route before stopping at Ban Houi Hia with its panoramic mountain views. Continue further to Ban Kiu Kharm Pom, a Khmu village that you can explore before arriving in Phou Khoun for lunch. Continue the road journey into Xiengkhuang province, where you reach the highest altitude of the day – 1500m above sea level. With some extra time, make a stop at Ban Sonboun, a Hmong village. End the day with a visit to a hidden Buddha Cave that served as an army hospital during the Vietnam War. An optional stop can be to visit an old Russian tank. Arrive at the hotel by early evening.

Day Trip to Plain of Jars

Visit the Mines Action Group (MAG) Office to discover the work of clearing remaining landmines and unexploded ordnance. In the Plain of Jars around Phonsavan, just a short drive away, you can see centuries old, giant stone jars scattered around and part of prehistoric burial rites. A short trek from Jar Site 2 will take you to Jar site 3, which has more than 150 jars. This is located atop a hill and offers you a breathtaking view of the surrounding countryside! Before you return in the afternoon, visit Jar Site 1 – the largest with more than 300 jars!

It houses religious artifacts including ancient Buddhist manuscripts and Khmer stone steles. Continue up the grand Lane Xang Avenue to admire the Patuxai war monument, inspired by the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Its observation terrace affords fantastic panoramas of Vientiane. Make your way to the 16th century Pha That Luang, a large golden stupa and the national icon of Laos. Set in expansive grounds dotted with several smaller temples, this three-tiered structure houses ancient Khmer and Laos artifacts. Finally, step inside the Cooperative Orthotic and Prosthetic Enterprise (COPE) Exhibition Centre. Thakhek is the capital of the Khammouane province in central Laos and is located on the banks of the mighty Mekong River that forms the boundary between Laos and Thailand.

Explore mysterious caves! After a hearty breakfast, drive down to the Kong Lor village where you will find a private boat waiting to take you to the famous Kong Lor caves. Your guide will navigate you safely through the seven kilometer long cave, where you can stop to explore the spectacular stalagmite gallery on foot. Once you reach the other side of the cave, take a short walk to see the remote Ban Pom Ngam village. After you return through the cave, a car will drive you to Thahkek. Arrive by late afternoon, just in time for a leisurely stroll where you can enjoy a stunning sunset over Mekong River.

Discovery Tour of Tham Pa Fa and Savvanakhet on Drive to Thakhek

Start early in the morning from your accommodation in Thakhek for your drive to Savannakhet. En route, you will visit the Tham Pa Fa (Buddha Cave), which has 229 centuries-old bronze statues. Only rediscovered in April 2004, this incredibly picturesque cave sits high atop a limestone cliff and offers magnificent views of the surrounding landscape. Continue southwards on your journey to arrive at Savannakhet by lunchtime. In the afternoon, set forth to visit the old French Quarters and the sacred That Inhang Stupa, before checking into your hotel. You can spend the rest of your day at leisure.

Sail amid the cluster of thousands of picturesque islands that dot the region. Step ashore at the peaceful island of Don Khon for a light lunch and then hop on a bicycle to explore the region. Zip along the route of an old abandoned railway and pass by beautiful French colonial buildings. Marvel at the scenic beauty of Liphi Waterfall as it cascades down a short distance to form a natural pool. Back on the boat, sit back and relax as the boat begins the return journey. Along the way, stop by the gorgeous Khone Pha Pheng Falls considered to be one of the largest in Southeast Asia.
