Tokyo

3 Days

Tokyo is a city like no other! Defined by cutting-edge design, quirky creativity and its own unique ancient culture, the city defines the best of both worlds.

Included Activities

Traditional Tokyo by Day
For a morning well spent, visit some of Tokyo’s best known landmarks with your local expert! Begin with a trip to the Imperial Palace, the residence of the royal family of Japan. While the palace is not open to the public, the area around it is quite scenic with many gardens and parks. From the outer garden you can also view the beautiful nijubashi bridges leading to the inner palace grounds. After this, proceed to the Asakusa locality, well-known for its “shitamachi” or old-world vibe. You can visit the Sensoji temple, a Buddhist temple believed to be Tokyo’s oldest. Adjacent to the temple you will find the Nakamise “dori” or street, where you can taste some traditional snacks if you like. Next, take the subway to your last stop – the famous Meiji shrine, dedicated to the spirit of Emperor Meiji. Surrounded by a forested area with 365 species of trees, the shrine is also a popular wedding venue, so don’t be surprised if you come across a bride and groom all dressed up for their big day! (Half Day; 0900 or 1400 hrs; Private Activity; Transfers by public transport; Fitness Level: Moderate)

Japanese Tea Ceremony & Tea Shop Experience
Join in a traditional Japanese tea ceremony conducted at the family-run Kakinuma tea shop near the Sensoji Temple in Asakusa. Discover the intricacies of making, serving and drinking tea; observe the ceremonial touches and flourishes involved in the process, and learn about the significance of each. Sip some of the tea prepared by the tea master, and have a Japanese confectionary to go with it! You will also be served a few other types and grades of green tea to taste, so you can get to know the kinds of tea leaves preferred by the finest tea masters. At the end of the tasting session, learn more about the various delicate utensils and cutlery used in a tea ceremony, some of which are also available for purchase. (Half Day; Morning/Afternoon Activity; Private Activity; Transfers by public transport; Meal included: Japanese tea and confectionary; Fitness level: Moderate. Please note that while kneeling is required for most Japanese tea ceremonies, small chairs can be provided upon request for those who find this difficult. This activity can accommodate a maximum of five people.)

Kyoto is to be seen to be believed. With no less than 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites, the city encapsulates traditional Japanese culture and tradition.

Included Activities

Japanese Cooking Class in a Machiya
Learn the secret tips for creating some of the most loved Japanese dishes in a morning cooking lesson at one of Kyoto’s typical Maichya (traditional wooden townhouses). Japanese cuisine has been declared a UNESCO Intangible World Heritage for good reason, cooked as it is with the freshest ingredients and masterful techniques. Get an overall idea about Japanese cooking styles from your chef in this cooking class designed for a small, intimate group. Learn how to prepare Bento style boxed meals under the expert guidance of your host chef. Cook Kyoto’s signature Shokado bento, a delicious spread that includes delectable bites of tempura, miso soup, egg roll, chicken teriyaki, sesame spinach salad and sushi. The greatest treat awaits you at the end of the class, when you get to taste your own Bento box! (Half Day, Shared Activity & No Transfers; Meal included: Lunch; Fitness Level: Easy; Please inform about any dietary restrictions in advance).

Kyoto Highlights: Half Day Tour
Discover a slice of traditional Japan on this tour of a selection of Kyoto’s UNESCO World Heritage sites. Visit the famous Golden Pavilion or the Buddhist Kinkakuji Temple, which was originally built as the retirement home of the 14th Century Shogun, Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. The lovely villa was turned into a temple after his death. Stop by the grand, 16th Century Nijo Castle with its imposing ramparts and spectacular gardens. Reflective of the power and grandeur of the Edo Shogunate, marvel at the castle’s architecture and building features like its intricate sliding doors, ‘chirping’ nightingale floors and secret chambers. Wind up your day tour by fortifying yourself at Nishiki Market, also known as “Kyoto’s Kitchen”. This street food district is lined with innumerable little noodle shops and food stalls selling deliciously fresh seafood, delectable sushi, traditional pickles and sweets. [Half Day, Morning Activity; Fitness Level: Moderate; Please bring comfortable walking shoes].

One Night in Kyoto
Uncover the attractive sights, smells and sounds of Kyoto after sundown along with your local guide. See a unique blend of the old and the new – centuries-old shrines sandwiched between busy streets, and avant-garde graffiti right next to antiques. Visit the Geisha district of Gion, filled with souvenir shops and old tea houses, where you can watch Geiko and Maiko apprentices breezing through beautiful lanes between engagements. Walk into any of the argon-lit tachinomiya – Japanese standing bars, where nihonshu pairings flow easily. Meet with cheerful local characters that add another dimension to this ancient city. Next, stop by the Nishiki food market to sample Kyoto’s myriad delicacies that include grilled tofu, Nishin soba noodles, and green tea ice creams among others. Head to the Teramachi shopping street with the ubiquitous Manga boutiques. Amble along the entertainment street of Pontocho, where hundreds of Japanese paper lanterns add a romantic touch. Retire for the night at Higashiyama across the Kamo river, after briefly dropping by Yasui-konpira Gu shrine and the Yasaka Pagoda. (Half Day; Time of the Day: 1900 hrs; Duration: 2.5 hrs; Private Transfer via taxi one way only; Fitness level: Moderate; Meals: Casual dinner and one drink; Notes: Additional food and drinks purchased can be paid for on the spot. Tour disbands at the restaurant area)
