Bangkok

Bangkok is a quintessential blend of old and new! Meaning the city of angels, Bangkok is the capital city of Thailand – and is its largest metropolis. The city has always been ahead in terms of its modernity, and was at the heart of Siam, the former name for the Kingdom of Thailand. Every street turn is a new adventure, where skyscrapers meet astonishing traditional architecture, interspersed with numerous beautiful temples, monasteries and palaces. It is a shopper’s paradise too – from gleaming luxury malls with glittering electronic goods and designer fashion to charming street and night markets where you can hone your negotiation skills and pick up a marvellous bargain or two.

Included activities

Essential Bangkok with Lunch

Discover Bangkok in all its regal glory! Begin with a cruise through the Thonburi klongs (canals) on a long tail boat. Stop enroute at Wat Arun, or the Temple of Dawn monastery that was built to resemble Mount Meru from Hindu mythology! Across the river, a short stroll takes you to the majestic Grand Palace, where the beautiful throne halls and enigmatic Emerald Buddha will leave you spellbound. Continue on to Wat Pho where you will find the famous reclining Buddha. Take a break for lunch at a local, riverside restaurant to sample some delicious Thai food. Once you have had your fill, continue on to Wat Benchamabophit, or the Marble Temple, which is a fantastic fusion of Thai and European architecture and offers interesting insights into the daily lives of monks. In the late afternoon, return to the comfort of your hotel.

Today, it is the largest cosmopolitan city north of Bangkok and, with its lively nightlife, ancient monasteries and surrounding countryside, boasts a distinct mix of ethnic and modern culture. The city has entered into Asia’s modern era gracefully, and is still relatively laidback and gentle. Meditative practice is common among the locals.
