Kumarakom is a gentle town of mesmeric beauty, where marshy mangroves, brackish lagoons, and sweeping inland lakes criss-crossed by canals, vie for attention.

Embark from Aattamangalam church on your exploration of the tranquil backwaters of Kumarakom in a local country boat. Sit back as your float by soothing green paddy fields while two expert boatsmen navigate the boat through picturesque canals. Observe villagers who inhabit the hamlets around the backwaters go about their daily chores. Stop by the village of Kandan Kavu for a firsthand look at the biodiversity of the region. Witness villagers expertly strip coconut fronds to make broomsticks and later, stroll across a plantation. Encounter the fascinating 400 year old, fully-functioning Pardesi Synagogue in the Jewish quarter. Visit the original grave of Vasco da Gama in St. Francis Church, before his remains were returned to Portugal. Discover Hill Palace, the state’s largest archaeological museum, which is located in the regal and artistic suburbs of Tripunithura.
