2 Nights

Jebel Akhdar, a limestone mountain surrounded by rugged terrain, sits at the heart of the Al Hajar Mountain Range located in northeast Oman. Extending up to Saiq Plateau, the region is home to lush wadis or valleys and terraces that make for a rustic getaway in the cool mountain air.

Included Activities

Explore Jebel Akhdar on Your Own
Discover hidden valleys and stroll past lush plantations in Jebel Akhdar, Oman. The name means Green Mountain, which might appear to be a bit of misnomer when you first arrive there, as it includes the largely barren and rocky Saiq Plateau, which rises 2,000m above sea level. But a more careful exploration will reveal the name isn’t entirely out of place. As you explore the area, discover hidden wadis and terraces where the soil is rich and fertile. Find apricot, walnut and pomegranate plantations, as well as scented Damask roses that are used to make the region’s famous rose water. If you visit in March, you can see the roses bloom. Go hiking through the gorges or swim in one of the wadi pools. Stop for a picnic lunch on the plateau and enjoy the view of the mountains. Take a leisurely walk from one village to the next. Find a cave to explore or try your hand at rock climbing. You can also visit a rose distillery. (Duration: full day; Self explore activity; No guides; No transfers; Meals and entrance fees are not included; Fitness level: easy)

Explore Jebel Shams’ Balcony Walk, and Wadi Nakhr, on your own

Starting from a secluded hamlet called Al Khitaym, embark on the Balcony Walk along the rim of Wadi Nakhr canyon around. Enjoy breathtaking vistas of the rugged landscape as you traverse this trail, well marked with flags. You might spot mountain goats and Egyptian vultures along the way. Pass by old houses that cling to cliffs, and a few hidden waterfalls. Once you reach the abandoned village and farm terraces of Al Sab, cool off under the waterfalls before you head back. Later, drive down to the canyon floor, to Wadi Nakhr or Wadi Ghul. Explore this palm-fringed oasis where local weavers craft colorful rugs in their homes. Finally, find a vantage point to soak in sunset views over Jebel Shams, before returning to Nizwa. (Duration: Full Day; Self-exploring Activity; Fitness level: Moderate; Notes: Wear comfortable walking shoes, driving distance Jebel Akhdar – Wadi Nakhar: 2.40hrs one way))
