Tangkahan is a lovely little isolated village at the confluence of the beautiful Kualsa Buluh and the Batang Rivers. Located right at the edge of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Gunung Leuser National Park, the village acts as a gateway to the forest’s rich plant and animal life. A wonderful destination for eco-tourists and wildlife lovers, it offers river tubing opportunities as well as jungle safaris and elephant treks into the National Park. This jungle nook on the banks of wild rivers is complete with pretty waterfalls, hot springs, a rickety suspension bridge, local riverboats and an elephant rehabilitation camp. The tropical village hosts many inns, lodges, resorts and guesthouses for travelers. It is also home to a small herd of domesticated Asian elephants who help the Park Rangers patrol the dense forests.
