Selingan Island is a turtle conservation site, part of the Turtle Islands National Park in the Sulu Sea, off the eastern coast of Borneo. With a limited number of daily permits and only overnight stays entertained, the focus is truly on the wild. Popular for beaches where dozens of the endangered Green and Hawksbill turtles land every night to lay eggs, Selingan Island is a year-round destination, accessible via Sandakan city. Daytime activities here include snorkeling and scuba diving in dedicated areas where you can admire the colorful marine life. Visitors can also wander about the island and see monitor lizards and sea birds make the occasional appearance. The highlight is at night when you accompany park rangers to witness turtle nesting or release hatchlings into the sea. The park headquarters with a turtle hatchery is at the heart of Selingan Island, where you can see turtle eggs reburied, tagged, and protected.
