Fakarava is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve for numerous rare species of birds, plants and crustaceans in French Polynesia. This protected coral atoll and natural reserve is the second largest coral reef of the Tuamotu Islands, to the south of Rangiroa. Fakarava is home to numerous tiny atolls that are completely closed off from the South Pacific Ocean, creating the perfect ecosystem for the natural breeding and preservation of precious marine life. Visit the local villages of pearl and coconut farmers, who are active conservationists of their rich ecosystem, and get to know the islanders better. A paradise for amateur scuba divers as well as expert undersea divers, it has secluded underwater valleys and passes that are known to attract large populations of reef fish as well as lemon, whitecap and hammerhead sharks. A word of caution: it will take all your will power to leave this tropical paradise behind.
